xx NASS REVIEW - July 2006
« Thread started on: Aug 12th, 2006, 06:33am »

From Birmingham Morning Post- 01/08/06

New Project- 29/07/06

NASS festival '06- Birmingham NEC

Nass 2006- sizzling heat, a fleet of skateboards and a flurry of riffs. Due to the insane demand of last years weekender in Cornwall, this weekends venue was the much larger Birmingham NEC. What better occasion to enjoy some insane four-wheel displays and some bludgeoning metal riffage than today?

Despite being a five band affair, my curiosity was aroused today by NEW PROJECT, one of THE most hotly tipped bands of the MYSPACE generation. Having already cleared an impressive 6,000 EPs on presale alone, I was told by those in the know that this was the band to check out...

So I missed opener FALSE PROPHET trying to squeeze through the arena door, such was the throng of people trying to get in. But once I got there the first thing one couldn't help notice was the enormous grin across singer DREW's humongous mug. Surely not a band that actually ENJOYS itself, given todays miserable Emo scene?

Ripping straight into CHEMICAL DRIVE and DECAY the 'banging guitar attack of the two guitarists, one hairy and one bald n' scary, and precise drumming of drummer MIKE totally took the songs I briefly heard on the PRIMAL LOGIC SLAVE EP to a new level... on record cold, unforgiving and industrial, on the stage an almost SKID ROW meets FEAR FACTORY live assault. Other highlights included MYSPACE favourites CYBERPUNK and upcoming video VOICE IN THE MACHINE.

Despite such a short set, that converted so many more kids to an undoubtably Australian cause, nobody could deny who the buzz band of the day was. Not since I was fortunate enough to catch the early Guns shows at the Astoria and Nirvana's first University appearances, back in halycon days, have I felt so buzzed about a relatively underground act. One can only guess at what glories the future holds...
